Open Doors Youth Service - Youth Suicide Prevention

The Open Doors LGBT Youth Suicide Prevention Project

The Open Doors LGBT Youth Suicide Prevention Project is funded by the Queensland Department of Communities in response to the Queensland Government Suicide Prevention Strategy 2003-2008.

LGBT young people are significantly more likely to suicide and self harm than their peers as a result of experiences of homophobia, discrimination, prejudice and isolation, which is felt significantly more in rural and regional areas due to the lack of accessible services and support.

This project is supporting service providers in regional Queensland to develop safe places for LGBT young people where they can access support and information about sexuality and gender identity, have opportunities to make positive social connections, and feel safe to be themselves within their community. This project is currently targeting 8 areas including Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Mackay, Longreach, Goondiwindi and South Burnett.
